As Further Military Actions Jeopardize Hormuz Exports | Oil Rises 4%

Oil Prices Surged:

As energy supplies via the Strait of Hormuz continued to be threatened, oil prices spiked more than 4% on Monday. However, Iran and the United States have announced additional military attacks.

By 0325 GMT, Brent crude futures had increased by $3.10, or 4.08%, to $79.11. West Texas Intermediate crude in the United States increased by $2.95, or 4.11%, to $74.36 per barrel.

On Sunday, American soldiers concluded yet another round of attacks on Iran. According to the Central Command, it is using precise munitions to attack dozens of targets at various places. The Revolutionary Guards of Iran claimed to have struck American military installations in Bahrain and Kuwait on Monday.

The Strait of Hormuz is open to commercial travel, according to a statement made by US President Donald Trump on Sunday. Despite Iran's earlier declaration that it blocked the strait after a ship was hit while traveling on an unauthorized path.

The Strait of Hormuz's Tension:

Before the battle started at the end of February, almost 20% of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas passed through the strait.

According to ship-tracking data from Kpler, six ships crossed the strait on Sunday. The lowest figure in five weeks.

The future of an interim U.S.-Iranian accord agreed last month is further called into question by the mounting attacks. After a further sixty days of discussions, this accord sought to reopen the strait and put an end to the conflict.

The Statement of the International Energy Agency:

The world's oil production increased by 4.1 million barrels per day in June as a result of the deal. but continued to be 9.4 million bpd below pre-war levels. In its monthly report released on Friday, the International Energy Agency stated as much.

ANZ analysts wrote in a note that "hopes of a relatively quick resolution to the recent skirmishes may be in doubt after tension escalated over the weekend."

The very mild increase in oil prices, according to IG market analyst Tony Sycamore, indicated that the market was adopting the stance. Therefore, the latest flare-up was an escalation inside a precarious ceasefire and did not result in the ceasefire's total breakdown.

"It remains to be seen how accurate that view is," he said in a letter.

The US-Iran War:

However, the United States launched numerous waves of strikes on Iran early on Monday morning. While the after an Iranian attack on a container ship in the Strait of Hormuz that burned the vessel ablaze. It's also left one crew member missing over the weekend. Iran replied by striking nations across the Middle East.

US stock futures declined, with the contract for the S&P 500 down 0.4% and that for the Dow Jones Industrial Average 0.3% lower. Nasdaq Composite futures fell 1%.

In Asian trade, Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index fell 1.1% to 67,786.86, while in Seoul. The Kospi lost 5.6% to 7,060.69.

The Global Market:

Shares in South Korean memory chipmaker SK Hynix. Because it gained 13% on its Wall Street debut on Friday, fell 10.6% in Seoul. Its bigger rival, Samsung Electronics, slumped 6.7%.

Elsewhere in Asia, Hong Kong's Hang Seng moved 0.1% higher to 24,202.41. While the Shanghai Composite index fell 1.2% to 3,947.34.

In Australia, the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.3% to 8,777.00.

US equities nudged higher on Friday as investors demonstrated continuing demand for winners of the artificial intelligence (AI) boom. The S&P 500 increased 0.4% and the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.3%. The Nasdaq Composite rose 0.3%.

The World's Expenditure on Chips and Data:

SK Hynix's shares rose when trading began at lunchtime after it raised nearly $26.5 billion by selling American depositary shares at a price of $149 apiece.

SK Hynix's shares in Seoul has already gained more than 600% over the last year owing to anticipation for AI. The growth has resulted into actual profits, driven by increasing demand for computer memory. But it has also generated fears that AI stock prices have gotten too high. So that the world's expenditure on chips and data centres will not yield enough productivity and profit growth to justify the investment.

Due to their massive market valuations, AI stocks have become some of Wall Street's most influential, and this has caused them to fluctuate sharply.

The Bottom Line:

The worldwide benchmark is the price of Brent crude. As a result, the US benchmark crude oil price increased 4% to $74.26 per barrel, while the price of Brent crude increased 3.9% to $78.96 per barrel.

Recently, the prices of both kinds of crude oil had returned to their pre-war levels. However, ships started shipping oil over the Strait of Hormuz again after the two sides came to a temporary deal to stop hostilities.
